even on dull days, and even though the window had blinds and a thick curtain, the light would always stream in and wake him up. and it was doing it then. his eyes felt plastered shut, and he felt a mild panic as he exerted some abnormal energy to force them half-open. “what if i can’t open my eyes?” but then they opened.

her body was in an almost fetal s, facing away from him. his eyes slunk down her side to where the blanket met her hip, and then back up to the back of her head, a huge tangle of hair obscuring her face. he edged over a bit and then stopped himself. it was probably not an appealing thing, waking up to him trying to hold her or do something sexual or whatever.

he flipped onto his other side, facing the clock and the glaring brightness. the curtain was all the way shut. he couldn’t account for it. he even had to tilt his head a little to read the clock. it was ten-ten a.m. as he watched it flip to ten-eleven a.m., the telltale screech and thud of two cars colliding on the street below appeared in the room as a faint but shrill metallic echo.

and then out of that echo, like the beginning of a symphony...anxious footsteps upstairs, moving back and forth trying to assess the damages from four floors up...an exclamation from a driver, or an onlooker, in a dialect from a country with a heavy muslim population (or maybe (but probably not) finland), something with a lot of tongue and flatness and “ahl, la, ha!” type phrasing...a different voice, deeper, gruffer, in the same language, retorting with furiousness...cut off by the first voice, louder and more stern than it was before, presumably insisting about how its body was not one to be fucked with...the footsteps upstairs now just a creak, the sound of tiptoes at the most ideal vantage point...the voices echoing back and forth from the canyon floor...“WILL YOU TWO SHUT THE FUCK UP AND MOVE YOUR FUCKIN CARS”

the sound of a conclusive stake being driven into the street filled him with calm. he grinned wider than he had in days and flipped decisively back to face the girl, shutting his eyes in the process. and it was only after he had halfway retreated back into sleep that he realized she hadn’t moved during the entire fracas. he edged over to her again, maybe trying to front like he had been unconsciously spooning her for hours and was just now waking up.

and though she was warm when he got behind her, there was clearly no rise-and-fall of breath. he nudged her shoulder and she rolled onto her chest, and her left arm dangled off the side of the bed. he was pretty immediately convinced she was dead, but he gave c.p.r. a shot anyway, or at least some variation involving chest-pressure and breathing. when this proved futile he expected to be frantic, but something kept him serene.

he met her the night before after they coincidentally walked by each other three times on his way to and from the store. the exchange between them was as brief as humanly possible: he had uttered a few phrases and she had responded with some responses and then they were engaged in his bed for a couple of hours and then mutual sleep. he felt they had entered into a contract, a marriage of no obligation. and this memory had somehow become a numbing fog that stopped him from worrying about her corpse in his bed.

he would have to dial emergency at some point, but he decided it was best to fabricate a more complex story for them. not that he’d murdered her or anything, or could even tell how she had died. it was just that he felt their meeting was unlikely. and it was. her bag was sitting on the floor next to the bed. he spread out the main pocket, which was empty apart from a thick stack of identical business cards. ESSEN M., they read. and underneath the name: ATTORNEY AT LAW. and there was a phone number underneath that. and in the off-white right-center void, printed in exactly the same spot on each card, was a red lipstick kiss.

the other pockets yielded nothing else, so he dialed the number on the card. he heard it ringing somewhere in his apartment, swiftly pinpointing its location in one of her coat pockets. he ended the call and, after making sure there wasn’t anything else in her coat, traded his phone for hers. the contacts and missed calls and outgoing calls were all just lists of ESSEN M. over and over and it took him a second to realize that he was flipping between the sections because they all looked so similar. and each ESSEN M. was attached to a different number. some were local, some were long distance, and some weren’t even in standard numerals, but were instead made of various angular symbols, often seemingly just repeating the same symbol. no telephone number was repeated twice.

he dialed the first number in the contacts list, and it rang endlessly. after some consideration he internet searched for “essen m.” and turned up an unmanageable amount of results. there is a city in germany called essen, and there are a lot of things there that begin with m. he tried the second number in the contacts list, which was entered in a foreign arrangement, like how certain countries enter their numbers in twos, i.e. 0-00-00-00-00-00. unfamiliar area code. its tone sounded filtered down, enervated. like someone had picked up but played a recording of a dialtone instead of speaking. it rang endlessly too. he checked the first number again...local call. the third number down was a local call too. he considered focusing on only local numbers. maybe someone would be willing to come by and corroborate his story. her body was beginning to be an uncomfortable presence. he looked down at her and wondered how long he had been sleeping next to her corpse. the whole scenario was beginning to hit him.

the third number rang and rang. normal tone. he was giving these endless rings a good sixty seconds before hanging up. the fourth number down was the first of the symbol numbers. like the second, it was also entered in twos: ▲- ◆◆-◆◆-◆◆-◆◆. the tone was piercingly high-pitched and clipped and it seemed to be ringing in double-time. he had scarcely gotten over the shock of the sound when a female voice picked up.

“hello”

“um hi, look, this girl is in my apartment and she’s dead and i don’t know her, or well i kind of know her, do you know who essen m. is...” it was the first time he had spoken that day and he was surprised at how panicked he sounded, because he felt he was going about things very matter-of-factly.

“i...” she cut him off.

“i’m sorry, i used this girl’s phone and your number was in it, listed under essen m.”

she took her time before responding. “and you said she’s dead?” she had a slight lisp.

“yeah, she was staying here and i woke up and she was dead.” it really was a ridiculous story. he was momentarily glad he hadn’t called emergency right away.

again there was a heavy, almost deliberate pause on the other end. “it’s going to take its time, but...”

“wait, what?”

“it’s killing you too.”

“what?” into blackest silence on the other end. “hello?”

fabo les: a short essay

okay so the internet is good for keeping factual and up-to-date, but if we look at secondhandembarassment or pwbc global skateboarding news or dis magazine there's another kind of potential, which is in bending the truth, or creating alternate histories. and really it goes beyond those outlets. anyone with an internet presence has created a fiction about themselves in some way, like for example only having dramatic personal photos on facebook or something like that. people have gone much deeper into this than i have, but just generally, what we're faced with is a world of endless truths and endless fictions, with no lines between them to help us distinguish which is which.

i'd like to group the skateboard company fabo les in with the aforementioned outlets. it doesn't make physical skateboards (yet) or physical anything, for that matter. and yet the internet affords it a chance to exist as a skateboard company, complete with a team and biannual catalogs. it's every bit as real as a "physical" company like habitat, even sharing a teamrider with that particular brand, fred gall. in the "real life" skateboard industry, riding for two board companies is a no-no, and yet, online, who is to say which company truly sponsors fred gall?

as long as the internet exists, it would seem that fabo les's potential is infinite. what follows are a few of the company's video explorations, to provide a further window into their worldview.

this video, entitled #DYET: A SPIRITUAL JOURNEY, loosely fixes its gaze on professional skateboarder adam dyet, whose outsized persona makes him a target for both ridicule and adoration among those who know his name. the hashtag in the piece's title indicates his strong internet presence, and this is fitting, because the video is made entirely of footage found online. is he a religious icon? is the video an incoherent mess? isn't everything an incoherent mess?

in BLISSFUL YO DADDY PRESENTS SEINFELDS, fabo les reclaims the last name of the ubiquitous actor/comedian and applies it to oft-ridiculed professional and amateur skateboarders. where is the line between the character jerry seinfeld and the actual man jerry seinfeld? if we are to assume that jerry seinfeld is a neat and witty womanizer with nice sneakers, how does he fit in with this ragtag bunch of "idiots"? is there anything worthwhile in the excess of doing a combination noseslide-tailslide shove-it in a hideous pair of osiris sneakers? is cleanliness really better?

and in fabocino ad, the company pits their thuggy, streetwise image (the company also sponsors a variety of rappers) against skateboarding's taboo regarding homosexuality, utilizing a clip from the 1980 film cruising. what is "fabo" about al pacino being smacked to the floor by a large man in a cowboy hat and some kind of jockstrap? fabo les's catalogs include sex toys as well as skateboards - isn't the company equally involved in the sex industry? there are a myriad of implications in this short advertisement.

reed’s screen was fucking up again. for the last year his laptop’s screen would shut off without warning and he’d have to move it back and forth and hit it for it to light up again. and reed was bugging out because he was supposed to be on skype in twenty minutes and it was worse than usual and he didn’t want to have to keep messing with it while trying to videochat. he closed the lid and went to take a shower, in hopes that it would sort itself out.

in the shower reed was thinking about icebreakers. “you look well” is a funny cliché and kind of charming. going in with something like “take your shirt off” + a smile is also kind of charming in a weird, blunt way. maybe just keeping his mouth shut would be the way to go. and maybe this chat would just be about personal problems anyway.

reed washed his face but he didn’t wash his body or his hair. this was so that his hair would retain a nice messy sheen in the harsh computerlight, and it was a precaution he took every time he videochatted, which was infrequently. when he emerged from the bathroom he checked the clock and he still had ten minutes. earlier he had rolled a blunt and sprinkled in some coke he stole from someone’s house party (he decided this was alright because he was one of the last people there and it definitely did not belong to anyone he knew and there wasn’t even that much of it), and decided to smoke at least half of it in the meantime.

sitting in bed with his cocaine blunt, reed messed around with his bedside lamp, trying to create some chiaroscuro that didn’t totally give away the alcohol and computer and insomnia infused perma-dark circles under his eyes. he put on some slow synthesizer music his friend made but it just made him think of that friend so he turned it off. the clock kept moving. he was almost done with the blunt and the glow of the computer’s screen was miraculously steady.

with the blunt down to a roach and stubbed out for later use, he got a video request from a username called sarah.g. he numbly accepted without thinking to give it a minute or two and there was sarah and she was wearing some kind of loose sheer sleeveless thing with some gauzy printing on it and he could see her nipples and she went “hi reeeeeeed...”

and reed went “oh shit” and all of that shower practicing went out the window.

she was in a bed in a dim room on the other side of the continent. there was some kind of makeup going on around her eyes; it was smudgy and in this smudginess there was some kind of ploy, like “i’m a mess...” she didn’t giggle at his exclamation but she smiled broadly and said “what’s up,” and “did you just smoke or something, you look craazy.”

“yeah, it’s down to this,” and reed held up the roach.

she smiled again. he could see the sharp rise and fall of her chest and he felt like he should say something sleazy.

they had done this before a dozen or so times in the past year. reed was “over” that coast and moved to the other for new fun, or something. he felt more comfortable but he also wasn’t getting his needs fulfilled. the blunt was pointing him in some other directions and it was confusing trying to be horny because you can’t feel up or make out with a computer screen. you have to go in.

it wasn’t sleazy at all but reed said, “what are you thinking about?” because it was a question girls often asked him and he always felt like it was an invitation, and it was.

“i’ve been waiting for this all day,” unflinchingly. “i thought we were gonna...” and then she told him to take his shirt off.

reed happily complied but he kept the camera pointed at his upperbody because he was not aroused. and it didn’t feel like coke dick either, it was more like too soon, or not tender enough, or maybe he should have watched some internet porn instead of smoking that entire stupid blunt.

“take yours off,” and she did, with that cross-armed over-the-head flip and a lot of relish.

“keep going!” she said, wide-eyed and visibly rubbing herself (though her camera was pointed upwards too).

this was reed’s last chance, and he took it. “hang on, my mouth...ah...cottonmouth...i need some water...” and he rubbed his face for comic effect and said, “i’ll be right back.”

“hurry up!”

reed did in fact have cottonmouth but the lack of erection was more pressing. he rubbed olive oil onto his dick in the kitchen and whispered some shit to himself like, “calm the fuck down man you’ve done this before,” and it worked. he kept rubbing while he poured himself some water, still slightly worried that he’d fall before reconvening with sarah.

luckily, this didn’t happen. he did forget to put his pants back on before getting back into bed, but if sarah saw anything, she didn’t say anything about it.

“okay, so...” reed had a new confidence. he remembered his mission.

“so...”

“where were we?”

sarah seemed a little frazzled by the interruption, but she recollected herself. “let me see your dick,” firmly. her eyes were lit up again, enlivened.

“take off the rest of your clothes.”

they complied with each other’s requests, moving their laptops back to expose the rest of themselves. reed leaned back against the wall, dick in hand. and then his screen went black. frantically he leaned forward, moving it back and forth until it lit up again, but he could only get it to light up when it was pushed all the way back, almost parallel with the keyboard.

“sorry, it’s that screen again...”

sarah wasn’t visibly exasperated, at least not to reed. she knew all about his screen. he gingerly moved it back into position, and the light shut off again. and again he yanked it back and forth, until somehow, miraculously, it illuminated sarah’s sprawled naked body, and his own naked body in a tiny box in the corner. he tried not to make any sudden movements.

sarah was rubbing her clit with some decent vigor and moving her other hand up and down her tits and belly, which jiggled lightly when she let them go. reed, still caught up in trying to make himself look erect, made some hesitant attempts at pleasuring himself.

“keep doing that,” she murmured. he realized what he was doing and put some renewed effort into it, though the gesture still felt half-empty. in a few minutes sarah was making exclamatory faces and reed was pumping steadily though not without intermittently slowing the pace a little. the whole thing was back to normal now. what was this even? the monthly...what was this?

she moved so her face was right up to the camera. “i want 2 see u come.”

reed tried to move the laptop closer with his foot so sarah could get a better view but it didn’t budge. the back was all warm and wet, and when he yanked his foot away in fright, some white drops, the same hue as his laptop, flew off of his toes.

“my computer is...”

“what...?” astonished and breathless, more a “what” about the abrupt interruption than it was about whatever was wrong with the computer.

“it’s nothing,” and he slid closer, trying to finish in a hurry. at least the screen was still working. but the wetness, what was that wetness? he ran his hand down the back of the screen and its surface melted into his hand; it was a little sludgy, like oil paint. the keyboard was level with the top of the mattress, sinking into an expanding pool of white.

sarah softly moaned and emphatically whispered “come for me!” the keyboard was a pool on the sheets and the screen was swiftly following it. reed had almost completely stopped paying attention to her. his hands were covered in that white, and he smeared it onto his dick and tried to follow that command, the shudder and twitch intensifying as sarah’s languid image melted back into the pool and the fibers of the bed and then disappeared, completely.

they were silent for awhile and then bill was like “i was serious, i’d definitely do it.”

and charlotte raised the same eyebrow and said that she “didn’t doubt it.”

“what’s that mean,” while he held in smoke.

charlotte half-smiled.

bill exhaled and shook his head. “whatever.”

charlotte gave bill the joint again and he gave it a pull. “i think it’s done. wanna try?”

she shook her palm and stared at a spot on the floor for awhile. bill’s eyes darted around the room. charlotte kind of looked like him. she had a big head and unkempt hair and big eyes that were very easy to get caught inside. and even when she dressed up she looked like a mess. someone once told bill he looked like a rapper when he dressed up to go to a funeral, like kanye west. wait did bill look like a girl? no, that’s ridiculous. he should probably put the records on the turntables back into their sleeves. maybe he should put something on. he had a new single from...who was it again? from chicago...acid. probably too intense though. these were the same things bill thought about when he had to urinate but was too excited to. thank god he didn’t have to now. but still, what could he say?

“i made this fish curry with that...” he wasn’t thinking straight. “on uh...”

charlotte was sitting in bill’s easy chair, resting her cheek on her palm. her hair was “up” but there was a lot of it and it wasn’t really “up” as much as it wasn’t going down the sides of her face. she looked like she had just woken up and bill was melting and midway hard also, but she probably couldn’t tell. “mm, what was the recipe?”

things went on like this for awhile. it wasn’t completely this awkward though. they talked about their mutual neighbor from #5 who had lost his cheery demeanor in favor of a menacing jaggedness for everyone in the building. charlotte had recently opened the building’s front door to find the guy on the other side of it. she giggled and went “oh, sorry!” but he just glared at her without a word. bill fucked up a nollie backside flip skating on the block and hit the tire on the guy’s vespa and he came outside in his crocs and told bill to “watch where the fuck he’s going” and “grow the fuck up”. they were mutually puzzled about this change.

charlotte eventually left. bill got up and sat in the chair she was in. it smelled like charlotte but it mostly smelled like weed. he was thinking about calling the number from craigslist. four hours later it was dark and he did.

“hello?”

“um hi i’m looking for cyndi”

“hi, this is cyndi.” cyndi was perkily professional.

“i’m um...calling about the ad on craigslist?”

the building stood on a main thoroughfare, zoned in the mixed use category; bottom floor an orthopedic shoe store, second floor a set of offices, third and fourth apartments. the door to the apartment was open a crack and bill walked in. it wasn’t like most of the apartments in the neighborhood because as soon as you walked in there were three short hallways with hardwood floors; one to the right, one to the left, and one, the longest one, straight ahead. the floorplan was appropriately phallic.

bill walked up the middle hall until he reached a large sort of living room, which snaked back and could probably also be accessed via the left hallway.

cyndi did not look like an aunt. she was vaguely dark and olive and mediterranean and maybe mid twenties and was pretty short and was wearing this grey-brown sundress type thing that looked better than grey-brown can be described (but to be fair it probably fell on the lower end of the taste spectrum, because it had this weird kind of coarse nylon ripple to it). she was also barefoot.

“bill?” she looked him straight in the eye, seriously.

“yeah...”

“i’m cyndi.” she motioned to a couch. “this is theo, he does all of the production here.” theo was kind of fat and vaguely dark and hairy and mediterranean and had a thick moustache. a rare, perfect caricature. he was like when your reason for being, your originality, is forgotten in favor of something that already exists. that’s what he looked like, at least. he looked like what you would expect, what bill expected. he stood up and smiled warmly.

“hey man,” camera in hand.

“hi,” and bill shook his hand.

“ready?”

“i guess.” there was a comfortable human smell in the room and it wasn’t a gnarly sex smell, nor was it like when people don’t clean their apartments for a long time. bill felt comfortable.

cyndi smiled. “you’ll be fucking me. let me show you the bed where we do most of our production.” theo followed, breathing heavy.

somehow bill expected this too. and theo’s camera had been on.

“we know this is your first time on camera, and that you might not want to go through the whole foreplay rigmarole of makeout, blowjob, cunnilingus...so we’re going to leave that up to you, boy. how do u want 2 start?”

“hey baby, when do u get off?” the voice on the line asked in a warm, hushed, narcotic tone. it sounded like he was in a red room, with a red lamp and red carpets, and the light from the lamp was fading off into pink on the walls. eddie felt himself rise immediately, and told the voice to hold on. he had to do some deep breathing and think of a response, but he didn’t tell the voice that. he just said “hold on, let me find out.”

eddie worked as a cashier/attendant at the gas station by the railroad tracks and the park and the stripmalls on the edge of town. he had been working there since six days after he turned sixteen. his father had told him he couldn’t support him anymore because real men worked for themselves, and as far as he was concerned, eddie was now a real man. although eddie wasn’t a real man, he turned in an application at the gas station, because that was where he spent a lot of time anyway.

eddie and his friends liked to hang out on the roof of the gas station, because they had seen that movie suburbia and the smashing pumpkins video for “1979” and they had decided that that was their life. there were stacks of palettes behind the minimart and you could use them as a ladder to get up there. at first they just sat there and talked, but pretty quickly they realized that they had stumbled on an established hangout for a preexisting part of the town’s population that hung out behind gas stations. so they became that way by default, if that makes any sense.

eddie didn’t smoke crack but his friend jerry did, and bob and derek sometimes did too. he didn’t do many of the pills bob would order from the internet either, but derek did. bob and derek were inseparable. they had lived next door to each other, two blocks over from the gas station, since forever. bob had sold a considerable amount of oxycontin to a girl called ingrid, who claimed that bob had told her that he had been fucking derek “for some time.”

when he heard this, jerry nervously denounced “that junkie bitch,” but added as an aside that “those two fags probably are fucking each other.” eddie didn’t care either way. they were trapped there together, and even if he tried to start some shit they weren’t going to leave because he called them faggots. they were meant to be there. it was like they had crawled over from the smell of the gas.

anyway, eddie was mostly into oxycontin because ingrid was into it. he didn’t actually know ingrid, but he talked to her every night on instant messenger, either on his laptop at the gas station or at home. he had to initiate all of the conversations, and they would usually be about eccentrics shopping at the minimart or how he wanted to get out of town or “have u heard that new three 6 mafia song.” ingrid would humor him, responding with a lot of :) and ;) and lol and things like that. but in person they just said hi to each other and that was it.

eddie got into oxycontin because one night ingrid had been off it for awhile and, having freshly smoked two blunts of reasonably fresh humboldt weed in a saab wagon with her best friend angela, she began to humor him with revelations about how much she liked to weededly masturbate. this was pretty arousing to eddie, because he did this every night. ingrid said nothing compared to some OCs though, not even that. and that was it.

all of this matters because eddie was planning on getting some from bob after work when he received the telephone call. he was slightly disoriented from when frankie had come by barefoot and smoked a bowl with him an hour and a half earlier, but really it wasn’t much compared to what he wanted. the call changed some things around though. eddie knew very well what time he got off, and he didn’t care that the voice on the other end was a man’s either. eddie just wanted to get off.

“twelve,” and he said it really smoothly too. he was a phone sex operator. “u want 2 chill?”

“yeah, here’s my address,” and the voice proceeded to give his address, which was an apartment in the row of brick buildings that stretched for a good halfmile between the gas station, the town, and the park - border buildings for the people who had to leave the town but had noplace else to go - geriatrics, junkies, video gamers, internet addicts, major sluts, lifetime virgins. eddie wrote it on his hand.

eddie was still mad cool. “who is this?” with a little force.

“don’t worry, u know me, i cum in all the time. this is eddie, right?”

“yeah.”

“okay, don’t worry then. u know me, see u in a bit,” and then he abruptly hung up.

then eddie called bob.

“whadup?”

“can u come by a little earlier? i have to leave right after closing.”

“nah man, can’t do it tonight.”

“at all?”

“nah i’m at this party it’s mad far and i don’t gotta ride and,” then he slurred some things that sounded like “i’m real fucked up right now.”

“fuck, man.”

“yeah, sorry, hit me up tomorrow though.”

“whatever. later.”

an hour or so later, eddie locked the minimart and started his car. it was a fifty second drive to the voice’s building. he walked up to the buzzer and buzzed.

“hey,” undercut by static.

“it’s eddie.”

then the buzzer noise.

the halls in that building were ultrasterile, gray carpeted, blank white walls. smell of dust and cleaning solution. there were five floors, the voice lived on the fourth floor, 4-f. eddie took the stairs. the apartment was at the end of the hall. he got to the door and knocked. no answer. while he waited he was picturing that redness, getting swallowed by that redness. he could see the lamp and its pinkish glow and the couch and the carpet and all of the room seemed like one big cushion. there are some rooms like that, rooms where there is no hardness.

somehow the rejection was making him rise. he knocked again. no answer.
